Booker T Washington Host Championship Rally

Booker T. Washington is a school with an outstanding academic reputation. The students embody greatness learned in the classroom and carry that greatness to other ventures.

On Wednesday, March 13th, 2019, students, their families, and faculty members gathered to celebrate the academics and basketball teams.

“The award ceremony was an atmosphere of love for all our hard work over the years. The BTW fanbase is a supportive cast who always brings the energy cheering us on to win,” said senior Mike McHenry.

Both teams had magnificent seasons and capped them with 6A state championships!

The boys' basketball team beat the Putnam City North Panthers 82-70 for the school’s 16th boys state title, the most by any school in state history.

“It feels amazing to add on to the most titles ever had by a high school in Oklahoma. It feels great to be part of history,” said Junior Jaylen Breath.

Hornets junior guard Trey Phipps earned MVP honors as he scored a career-high 42 points! Phipps scored 20 of his 42 points in the fourth quarter to help the Hornets secure the gold ball. Senior center Seth Hurd added 22 points and 11 rebounds, and guard Bryce Thompson, the 2018-19 Gatorade State Player of the Year, contributed 12 points and 8 assists.

Off the court, the Hornets' academic team also brought home a 6A state title after defeating Norman in the championship game 340.00 to 150.00. This is the academic team's second 6A championship in 4 years.

This year, the academic team was made up of 19 students who competed on three different teams - all went undefeated during the 2018-19 season. The students went through a very rigorous tryout and were selected out of 30 students.

Head Coach Jayme Howland said, “BTW's Varsity Academic Team has a national reputation for being tough competitors. Because of this spotlight, Mark and I insist that the team be as courteous and humble with competitors and officials as they are with one another. This year, particularly, our players are amongst the kindest, most humble, and mutually supportive players that either of us has ever coached."
