Dear Tulsa families,
I am sure that you, like me, are deeply saddened by the tragic news from Uvalde, Texas. You may also be angry and scared. It is difficult for all of us to comprehend such catastrophic events. As parents and family members who love our children more than life itself, we feel closely connected to the families, educators, and community members who are devastated by this loss of innocent lives in their community.
Please know that our Tulsa Public Schools team regularly evaluates our practices and works to improve the ways in which we keep our students and teachers secure. Our safety protocols are continuously evolving to keep up with the changing world outside of our school buildings.
When unimaginable horrors make their way into our world, it can be difficult for us as adults to keep our heads up and our hopes high. We don't have answers to the hard questions our children are asking about why bad things happen to good people. We have seen it happen so often lately that we lack the energy and optimism to make meaning of meaningless violence and suffering. It happened because sometimes the world is a dark place and people can be cruel. We try to explain that to children as best we can - but it is not enough.
We must be a sanctuary in dark times; lifting up our children, families, and teachers committing to keeping them safe in our care. We must continue to foster safe, loving, and affirming school and neighborhood communities where every child feels seen and cared for. We must continue to lift each other up, to honor and celebrate the diverse voices that make up our Tulsa Public Schools family and to give each other the grace we would want others to give us during difficult times.
Our Student and Family Support Services team has compiled resources for our students, families, and team as you navigate through this difficult situation. We also have resources on our website at www.tulsaschools.org/familyresources. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for support.

Debemos comprometernos a mantenerlos seguros bajo nuestro cuidado.
